T5W | Top SFF Books on Your TBR

Welcome one, welcome all, to ‘Emma Remembers Top 5 Wednesdays Exists And Decides To Join In’… again. Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme/challenge which was created by the wonderful Lainey from gingereadslainey and is now overseen by the equally lovely Sam from Thoughts of Tomes. Every Wednesday, participants devise their Top 5 based on a given topic.

This Wednesday’s topic is Top SFF Books on Your TBR and this is a Booktube SFF Awards Babble Crossover Topic – basically, it’s what it says on the tin, it’s a chance to talk about the science fiction and fantasy books you want to read ASAP. Given the YA fantasy kick I seem to be on right now, it seems like the perfect time for me to take a look at the huge TBR I still have and to pick out some books to highlight here as my Top 5.

5. Nevernight by Jay Kristoff (x)

Do you know when you eagerly anticipate a book for no other reason than the (pretty damn fine) cover design and simply one phrase in its synopsis? That, to me, epitomises Nevernight. I’ve never read anything by Jay Kristoff and don’t even know much about his writing style or if we will get alone well at all. However, what I do know is this synopsis: “In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.” Need I say any more in its favour? I don’t think so.

4. Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho (x)

Firstly, this book has a beautiful cover. Secondly, it’s set in Regency London and features a Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers aka magicians. Um, hello, yes please! Much like The Dark Days Pact (which will make an appearance in a moment), I expect Jane Austen-style Regency manners and etiquette to be mixed with fantasy and magical societies and such like… I doubt I’ll be disappointed if that’s all I get out of this, to be honest, but obviously this stuff is my jam.

3. The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave (x)

I remember this book being a complete and utter cover buy. I was innocently browsing Waterstones last year and this was very prettily laid out on a table front-and-center, because Waterstones aren’t dumb and they know fine well what they’re doing. This book is beautifully designed and features cartography, compasses, and maps so, obviously, I decided I needed it. And then I promptly deemed it too beautiful to read… which is a dumb. This recently won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2017, reminding me yet again that I need to pick this book up asap – thanks for that (again) Waterstones.

2. The Dark Days Pact by Alison Goodman (x)

In case you somehow missed the memo (or dozens of memos), I adored the first book, The Dark Days Cluband was eagerly anticipating the release of this sequel at the start of this year. Needless to say, I know if I devour this book now I will have to wait months for the next and I’m impatient and greedy and that simply will not do. So I’m saving this book (hence why it’s still on my TBR) until I’m in the mood for that very specific tone of Regency romance meets Buffy but I simply can’t wait to see what kind of shenanigans Lady Helen and Lord Carlston get up to next.

1. The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater (x)

It’s getting embarrassing that this book is still on my TBR. However, in my (very strong) defence… I don’t want The Raven Boys series to end and as soon as I read this fourth and final book, it will end. So you see my dilemma, right? I adore the world and characters Maggie Stiefvater has created over the course of the first three books and I’m not entirely ready to let go of Blue and Co. yet. Mind you, I’m not sure when I will be ready so this book definitely deserves the top spot on my top SFF books on my TBR – something tells me it will stay in that position for a long time.

So there we have it – those were the top 5 sci-fi and fantasy books that are on my TBR. What SFF books are you excited to pick up in the future? Do you agree/disagree with my choices? Do you have a Top 5 Wednesday list or post of your own? Be sure to link it below if so; I’d love to take a look!
